Miles '56 Released for Centennial
Miles '56: The Prestige Recordings arrived June 19, collecting studio sessions from Davis's 1956 marathon dates with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones—material first recorded to fulfill contract obligations to Prestige after he signed with Columbia.
The release coincides with the centennial of the trumpeter's birth, which fell on May 26. Familiar to many as Cookin', Steamin', Workin', and Relaxin', the recordings appear here in chronological order. Blue Note also issued a Tone Poet vinyl edition of Birth Of The Cool on May 22, mastered from the original tapes.
These reissues frame 2026 as a year to revisit Davis not through hagiography, but through the raw materials of a restless, shape-shifting career.
Miles '56 is available now via Craft Recordings in CD, vinyl, and hi-res digital formats.
