Tenderlonious Reimagines Coltrane's Africa/Brass Live

Tenderlonious has released Africa/Brass Live on July 3rd via his 22a label, honouring Coltrane's original recording while pushing it forward with a Coltrane-like fervour. The three-track album captures a performance at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival in October 2025, as part of Pique-nique's Take Two series.

Each Take Two event begins with an uninterrupted, high-fidelity playback of a seminal album, followed by a live reinterpretation with full artistic freedom. Tenderlonious initially considered A Love Supreme but decided against it as the more obvious choice, selecting Africa/Brass as the underrated one, the modal one.

For the quartet, Tim Carnegie, his longtime drummer, flew in from London, with Horatio Luna on bass and On-Ly on piano completing the group. The result documents a single Monday night where modal jazz became a fierce search rather than mere tribute.
