Jéssica Pina Joins Brooklyn Funk Essentials

Portuguese trumpet player and vocalist Jéssica Pina features on Brooklyn Funk Essentials' eighth studio album Black Butterfly, released May 15, 2026.

Pina joins Swedish trombonist Ebba Åsman and saxophonist Loïc Gayot in the horn section of the New York-based collective founded by producer Arthur Baker and bassist Lati Kronlund. The nine-track album continues the group's exploration of funk, jazz, and soul with contributions from vocalist Alison Limerick.

Pina, who toured with Madonna's Madame X world tour, has steadily built a profile blending her Cape Verdean and Angolan heritage with a jazz foundation. The album takes its title from the black butterfly as "a symbol of hope, renewal and inevitable change"—a fitting frame for a musician navigating between session work and her own creative path.
