Butcher Brown Reimagines Davis and Coltrane
Butcher Brown and Nicholas Payton will align on a new album paying homage to Miles Davis and John Coltrane, releasing July 24th via Concord Music. The collaboration, titled A Supreme Blue, reinterprets classic material from Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme with a contemporary edge.
Sessions took place at Spacebomb Studios in Richmond with little to no preparation, with engineer Alex de Jong adding dub effects live-in-performance. It's a bold approach for such hallowed repertoire. "I think they would have appreciated hearing their music in this way, and not hearing it still being played the way they did it in 1959 or 1963. It's 2026," says drummer Corey Fonville.
The release arrives just five days from now, celebrating the centennial year of both Davis and Coltrane—two architects whose work defined the modal and spiritual branches of the music.
